How do I choose the right food packaging machine for my product and output?

Update Time:2026/10/13

Quick Answer

Match the machine to three inputs: your product form (granule, powder, liquid, paste or solid), your bag format (roll-film bag versus pre-made pouch) and your target output in bags per minute. TOP Y Machinery sizes every line 15–20% above current demand, then confirms the choice with a free sample test on your own product.

Step 1 – Match the dosing system to your product form

The filling system, not the bag maker, decides whether a machine suits your product. This is the first question our engineers ask on every project.

Product formRecommended machineTypical output
Free-flowing granules – nuts, candy, frozen food, snacksVFFS + multihead weigher40–80 bags/min
Fine powders – flour, milk powder, spices, additivesVFFS + screw (auger) filler30–60 bags/min
Liquids – cooking oil, juice, saucesVFFS or rotary + piston pump20–60 bags/min
Pastes – jam, ketchup, tomato pasteVFFS + servo piston pump20–50 bags/min
Solids in pre-made pouches – coffee, pet food, retort mealsDoypack or rotary pouch machine15–120 bags/min

Step 2 – Decide between roll-film and pre-made pouch

  • Roll-film VFFS forms the bag from a film roll. Lowest film cost per pack and the fastest route to high volume, but bag shapes are limited to pillow, gusseted and quad-seal styles.
  • Pre-made doypack or rotary machines pick and fill a ready pouch. Higher film cost, but they support zipper, spout, retort and gusseted formats with a retail-ready finish.

Step 3 – Set an output target with headroom

Size for 15–20% above today's demand. On delivered projects, a machine bought exactly at current capacity is usually the machine that needs replacing within two years, while a correctly sized one absorbs a second shift and a new SKU without a second purchase.

Step 4 – Confirm with a sample test before you commit

Send a product sample and your film. You receive a written test report with the achieved speed, filling accuracy in ±grams and seal strength, plus the matched machine configuration.

What to send us for an exact recommendation

  • Product sample and bulk density
  • Bag type, bag width × length, and fill weight per pack
  • Target bags per minute and daily shift pattern
  • Retail or export market requirements (CE, FDA, GMP)

Where selection most often goes wrong

  • Choosing on speed alone. A 120 bags/min machine on a fragile product produces more rejects than a stable 60 bags/min line.
  • Ignoring film behaviour. Recyclable and compostable films need different sealing temperatures and pressures than standard laminates.
  • Forgetting the ceiling. A VFFS with a multihead weigher needs roughly 3.2–3.8 m of height; TOP Y builds low-ceiling secondary feeding variants when a workshop cannot meet that.
